What VPS Hosting is
A Virtual Private Server is an isolated slice of a physical server with dedicated CPU, memory and storage, and full root access. Unlike shared hosting, its resources are not contended by neighbours, and the software stack can be configured exactly to the application.
How VPS Hosting works
A VPS gives a project its own guaranteed slice of a server — dedicated CPU, memory and storage, and full root access — but the client still never touches it. We provision, harden, configure and monitor the box end to end, the same done-for-you service as managed hosting, just with more headroom and control underneath. The difference is what the environment can do, not who runs it: we do.
That control is what makes it the right home for heavier work — custom server software, background workers, specific runtime versions, or simply guaranteed resources that neighbours cannot contend for. It suits custom platforms, portals and busier WooCommerce stores. The responsibility that comes with a full server is real, but it is ours to carry; the client just gets an isolated, well-sized environment that behaves predictably under load.
Where it earns the shortlist
A VPS earns the shortlist when an application needs more than a standard managed environment can give — custom runtimes, background workers, or guaranteed dedicated resources with room to grow. It is the natural home for custom platforms, member portals and heavier WooCommerce stores, and it keeps the fully-managed experience while adding the control and isolation those builds demand.
- Custom platforms and applications with specific runtime needs
- Heavier WooCommerce stores and member portals
- Clients wanting an isolated environment with guaranteed resources
When teams choose it — and when they don’t
Choose VPS Hosting when
The app has specific runtime needs
Custom server software, background workers or particular runtime versions.
It is a heavier store or portal
Busy WooCommerce or a member portal wants dedicated, uncontended resources.
You need guaranteed headroom
Isolated CPU, RAM and storage that neighbours cannot eat into.
You want control, still managed
Full root and a custom stack, provisioned and maintained by us.
Look elsewhere when
It is a standard content site
Managed hosting is simpler and cheaper for a typical WordPress or brochure site.
You need global edge delivery
Spiky or worldwide traffic is better served by Vercel or Cloudflare.
The front end is static or Next.js
A modern front end deploys more cleanly to the edge than to a single server.
Pricing, in plain terms
VPS hosting is our own managed service, priced as a recurring plan that covers the server and our full provisioning, hardening, deployment and monitoring — sized to the resources the application genuinely needs. It sits above standard managed hosting because the box is dedicated and the management deeper, but we deliberately size it right rather than over-provision, so you pay for the headroom you use, not a round number.
The SmartaStudio take
We reach for a VPS when an application has genuinely outgrown standard managed hosting — a busy WooCommerce store, a member portal, anything needing custom runtimes or guaranteed resources. You get dedicated headroom and full control, and we still run the box end to end so it stays your problem in name only. The honest caveat is that it is more capacity and cost than a standard content site needs; for those, managed hosting is simpler and cheaper, and for a modern edge-delivered front end we would point you at Vercel or Cloudflare instead.
