What Shopify is
Shopify is a hosted, all-in-one commerce platform. It handles the hard, unglamorous parts of selling online — checkout, payments, PCI compliance, inventory, tax and hosting — on fast, reliable infrastructure, and exposes it all through Liquid themes or a headless storefront via the Storefront API.
Editor & developer experience
For the people running the store, Shopify’s admin is one of the cleanest in commerce: products, orders, discounts, inventory and reporting are all a click away, and day-to-day trading needs no developer. Staff learn it quickly, and the app ecosystem covers most operational needs without custom work.
For developers, there are two routes and we pick per project. A custom Liquid theme keeps everything inside Shopify and is fast to ship; a headless build puts a Next.js front end on the Storefront API (often with Hydrogen patterns) for a bespoke, app-like experience. Either way the checkout, payments and PCI compliance stay Shopify’s problem, which is exactly where that risk belongs.
Where it earns the shortlist
Shopify earns the shortlist whenever reliability, a high-converting checkout and low operational overhead matter more than total back-end control. It is the pragmatic choice for brands that want to sell, scale and stay up without running infrastructure — and because we build the storefront bespoke on top, it never has to look like a template.

When teams choose it — and when they don’t
Choose Shopify when
You want a reliable hosted checkout
A battle-tested, high-converting checkout with payments and PCI handled.
You would rather not run servers
Hosting, scaling and Black Friday uptime are Shopify’s job, not yours.
You sell across channels
Online, social and in-person selling from one inventory and admin.
You need to move fast
A bespoke storefront ships quickly on proven commerce foundations.
Look elsewhere when
Content and commerce are one
Deeply content-led stores on WordPress are cleaner on WooCommerce.
You need full back-end control
Self-hosted WooCommerce gives total control of data and checkout logic.
You want zero transaction fees
Shopify charges fees unless you use Shopify Payments; WooCommerce has none beyond the gateway.
Pricing, in plain terms
Shopify is a monthly subscription with tiered plans, plus card fees and — unless you use Shopify Payments — a small per-transaction fee on top. For most independent brands it lands as a predictable monthly cost well below the price of running your own commerce infrastructure. We build the bespoke storefront as a project on top and scope the plan to your volume.
The SmartaStudio take
Shopify is what we recommend to most brands that just want to sell well without running infrastructure — the checkout converts, the platform stays up, and we make the storefront genuinely bespoke so it never reads as a template. The honest caveat is that it is hosted and opinionated: if you need content and commerce deeply woven together on WordPress, or total control of the back end, WooCommerce is the better call. For most stores, though, Shopify is the low-risk, high-conversion default.
