> How we build on WordPress: bespoke themes, structured custom fields and a tight plugin footprint. When a custom WordPress build is the right call — and when it is not.

_Fully custom WordPress — no page builders, no bloat._

We still build on WordPress — but properly. Bespoke themes, clean custom fields and only the plugins a project genuinely needs. No Elementor, no off-the-shelf themes.

## What it is

WordPress is the most widely used CMS in the world, powering a large share of the web. It pairs a mature editorial workflow with an enormous ecosystem of plugins and integrations, and a familiar admin editors already understand.

## Why we build on it

For content-led marketing sites where the client wants a CMS their team already knows, a fully custom WordPress build is hard to beat. We hand-build the theme, model content with structured custom fields, and keep the plugin footprint tight — so the site stays fast, secure and maintainable rather than becoming a page-builder liability.

## Editor & developer experience

For editors, a fully custom WordPress build is the admin your team already knows — no retraining, no learning curve. The difference is what we hand them: structured custom fields instead of a free-for-all page builder, so publishing is guided and consistent rather than a blank canvas that drifts over time. The block editor stays where it helps, and we lock down the rest so a busy team cannot accidentally break the layout.

For developers, the discipline is in the restraint. We hand-build the theme in PHP with a tight, deliberate plugin list, model content with proper custom fields, and treat performance and security as build requirements, not afterthoughts. There is no Elementor, no bloated multipurpose theme — the things that give WordPress its bad name. Done this way it is maintainable and fast; done the usual way it is a liability, and the gap between the two is entirely down to how it is built.

## Where it earns the shortlist

WordPress earns the shortlist for content- and blog-led marketing sites where the client wants a CMS their team already runs, and where the enormous plugin ecosystem genuinely saves build time. Built properly — custom theme, structured fields, minimal plugins — it is fast, secure and cheap to maintain. It is the pragmatic choice when familiarity and a broad ecosystem matter more than a decoupled, app-like front end.

## Best for

- Content and blog-heavy marketing sites
- Teams already comfortable in the WordPress admin
- Projects that need a broad plugin ecosystem out of the box

## Choose it when

- **The site is content and blog-led** — Editorial workflows, categories and archives that WordPress does natively.
- **Your team already knows the admin** — No retraining — they publish day one in an interface they understand.
- **You want a broad plugin ecosystem** — Proven solutions for common needs, without building everything from scratch.
- **Budget favours a familiar stack** — A custom theme on WordPress is often the most cost-effective route to a great content site.

## Look elsewhere when

- **The front end is app-like** — Dashboards, portals and logged-in product belong on Next.js, not a theme.
- **Performance is non-negotiable** — When Core Web Vitals must be flawless, headless WordPress or Sanity plus Next.js gives more headroom.
- **Content feeds many surfaces** — If one content source must serve a site, an app and more, a headless CMS is the cleaner fit.

## Watch-outs

WordPress earns its bad reputation only when it is built badly — bloated themes and dozens of plugins. It also carries more security and maintenance overhead than a headless setup. When performance is paramount or the front end is app-like, we go headless (below) or reach for Next.js and Sanity.

## Pricing, in plain terms

WordPress itself is free, open-source software — the cost is in building it properly and hosting it well. A custom WordPress build sits within our standard brochure and eCommerce project ranges, and it then needs managed hosting, updates and backups on a recurring plan. Premium plugins or licences (a form tool, an SEO suite) add a modest annual cost we scope up front so there are no surprises.

- **Software:** Free / open-source
- **Build from:** ~£4,000 +VAT
- **Model:** Project build + managed hosting

## The SmartaStudio take

WordPress only deserves its bad reputation when it is built badly, and most of it is. We build it the other way — custom theme, structured fields, a plugin list you could count on one hand — and the result is a fast, secure, genuinely maintainable content site on a CMS the team already knows. We reach for it when familiarity and editorial workflow matter most. When performance is the whole point or the front end is app-like, we go headless or move to Next.js and Sanity instead, and we will tell you which up front.
